More information on Belly Dancing Classes
Just mentioning the words Belly Dancing usually conjures up images in the minds of most people of scantily clad women dancing the dance of the seven veils; a sexual temptress ready to torment the heart and souls of all men. And they can be forgiven for thinking, that belly dance is intended for the entertainment of men; Hollywood and the western world have done much to cultivate this misconception. But the true origin of Belly Dance couldn't be further from these Hollywood images.
This art form was derived in the Middle East at a time when the segregation of men and women was common place. Women danced at all kinds of social and family events where men were not allowed. It enabled women to express themselves, creating self confidence, and a sense of community. It makes the most of a woman's natural curves and natural body structure, embracing all body types. Movements are smooth and curvy, and usually isolated to the mid-rift area, creating a strong feminine interpretation of the music.
Belly Dance was brought to the West by a performer called Little Egypt who danced at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. People were intrigued by the rhythm and style of this exotic oriental dance, and once Hollywood had caught the bug this art form very quickly turned in to a form of entertainment. Flamboyant colourful costumes were introduced, as were props such as veils, zills, sticks, swords, plates and even candelabrum with lighted candles. Various styles and variations have grown over the years providing something for everyone's individual taste.
Belly Dance is more popular now than ever, and is for everyone; any age, any shape, and any size. It is hugely enjoyable, liberating and a great way to improve your fitness.
